SCOTT GRIZZLE - HAZARD HIGH SCHOOL

I was first introduced to Jackson in the spring of 2018 when I decided to take a chance and do a series of ZOOM meetings where we could communicate using an interactive format.

As a first-time head coach attempting to turn around a program that had suffered a 23 game losing streak just a few years prior to my arrival, I was in need of some help.  I purchased his first book during that time, Culture Defeats Strategy, and soon realized Coach Jackson was the advantage my team needed. I was learning something new every time I opened the book and was improving exponentially through the Zoom sessions. In no time I was implementing his ideas.

As a result, we began to see our players work together as a band of brothers, respect each other more, and speak the same language.  I can’t stress enough how valuable the Zoom sessions were.  It was clear that Coach Jackson was not just trying to run a business but he genuinely cared about helping grow and improve my program, as well as developing me into a better coach.

Thanks in large part to Coach Jackson, in four years at Greenup County we improved the program to achieve three consecutive winning seasons for the first time in school history, set multiple records, and reached back to back victories over our county rival for the first time ever.

Strategies we felt were vital to our success:

  • Core Values – Everyone involved in our program being fluent in our language.

  • Boot Camp – Earning the right to wear our school colors.

  • Fascinate them on a daily basis – Show motivational videos and tell them stories daily.

  • Power of Words – Named our facility “The Farm”, weight room “The Muscle Barn – Animals Only”, related to our community and our core values.

  • We noticed substantial improvements in our culture by implementing these ideas.

We also noticed our kids were having FUN and coming to “The Farm” was something they looked forward to each day.

Now in 2020, I am fortunate to be taking on a new role as the head coach at Hazard High School.  A school that has won and appeared in the state finals as recently as 2016. I believe Coach Jackson’s culture factory is a game-changer for coaches of all sports and all levels. I’m looking forward to using his resources to help create an elite culture at a new school with new challenges.
