At the end of each ELITE COACHES' MASTERMIND, we go to breakout rooms and discuss our 'big 3' take-homes from the speaker.
Here is what I took from Stephen Mackey, of 2Words Character Development:
1.THE CYCLE TO TEACH CHARACTER
- MODEL - Coaches must first model what a 'winner' looks like. This can't be the beginning and the end. Coaches who are 'good people' isn't enough, it is just the start.
- TEACH - Have a set curriculum to teach the value or character trait. The example Stephen used was shaking hands. "Teach them to look the other person in the eye, firm handshake, speak clearly, 'nice to meet you'.
-TEST - We don't know if our players have integrity until we see it in action. We don't know if they have grit until we put them through an activity that requires toughness.
- REWARD - 'What gets rewarded gets repeated." Celebrate the athletes who are demonstrating what you want to see.
2. YOUNG ADULTS KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE GAME
Mackey spent 90 minutes interviewing ten athletes and came away with a better understanding of just how programmed young people are to knowing how to 'play the game'. "Adult don't understand us; we feel there are consequences if we aren't who adults expect us to be. We know we need to respond a certain way in front of our coaches to not get punished'. The student-athletes are 'checking a box' in front of adults but not 'living the message' 24/7.
Mackey says, "if you say to your team, 'Today we are going to talk about respect'...you have already lost.
Make sure the time spent with you group is not just you standing in front of them preaching. At North Forney, we use short movie clips to bring home our messages.
3. HAVE A CERTAIN TIME EACH WEEK THAT YOU LAUNCH YOUR MESSAGE
Early in the week meet with your team and give them the message of the week so to speak. Make sure it is the same day and time each week. Stephen mentioned Texas coach Joe Dale Carey does this on Saturday mornings after his team is finished with video study from the previous game. They will get the message before going home to 'reset the clock' on a new week (good stuff).
Find times to have break out sessions and have the players discuss in small groups what their 'big 3' was, write them down and post in their locker.
GOOD STUFF FROM STEPHEN MACKEY AS ALWAYS!
Never heard of a mastermind?
It is a group of growth-mindset people who want to get better together! The ELITE COACHES' MASTERMIND's structure will be Monday Presentations and Thursday 'Chats'. It will be a community of dudes who will support and learn from each other! MONDAY MESSAGES A typical class will go as follows:
Check in - all members will have an opportunity to let us know how they are doing, etc.
We will have a 'podcast-like' discussion with an elite speaker for around 30 min.
Q and A - MM members can now ask questions to the speaker.
Breakout rooms - MM members will go to rooms of 6-8 and each get to discuss 'take-homes' from the speaker.
Close - 7:45-8:00 pm CST
THURSDAY CHATS (Noon CST) A more informal gathering where all share 'what's going on' in their world, what issues they have been dealing with and what tactics they can share to help the group. THIS IS WILL BE A YEAR-ROUND PROGRAM. I WILL CONTINUALLY FIND ELITE SPEAKERS AND ASK THEM TO BRING A MESSAGE TO HELP US BECOME MORE! "WE ARE HAPPIEST WHEN WE ARE IMPROVING."
