summer playbook #1 - earn your key
Summer motivation and celebration.
Because the truth is…
most programs talk about summer.
The best ones make it matter.
Every player is building something this summer.
Not a season.
Not a highlight tape.
A house.
And whether they realize it or not…
they’re working on it every single day.
- Some are laying brick.
- Some are skipping days.
- Some are cutting corners no one sees.
But when the season shows up…
everybody has to live in what they built.
Story - 'The Old Carpenter'
There was an old carpenter who had been building houses for over 40 years.
One day, he walked into his boss’s office and said,
“I’m ready to retire. I’m tired. I’ve done this a long time.”
His boss nodded and said,
“I understand. But I’ve got one last favor to ask…
build me one more house.”
The carpenter didn’t want to.
He was ready to be done.
But out of respect, he agreed.
From day one, something was different.
He cut corners.
Used cheaper materials.
Rushed through parts he used to take pride in.
No one noticed.
No one said anything.
And honestly… he didn’t care.
He was already thinking about what was next.
A few months later, the house was finished.
He went to his boss, handed him the keys, and said,
“It’s done.”
His boss smiled, took the keys…
and handed them right back.
“This is your house,” he said.
“My gift to you for all your years of work.”
And in that moment… it hit him.
Every shortcut.
Every rushed decision.
Every time he didn’t give his best.
He had to live in it.
That’s summer.
Your players are building their house will be building their house.
- Every lift.
- Every sprint.
- Every day they show up… or don’t.
They’re making decisions they’ll have to live in when the season gets here.
🔧 How to install it
On the last day of school, tell this story.
Then hold up a set of keys painted in your school colors.
Tell your team:
“At the end of the summer, we’re having a hamburger cookout.
And the players who meet our attendance standard…
will be handed the keys to the house they built.”
Set your standard:
Attendance (example: 80% or higher)
Effort / attitude
Make it clear.
Not everyone gets one.
That’s the point.
💡 Why it works
It’s visual
It’s simple
It rewards consistency, not talent
And it gives your summer a finish line your players can actually see.
Daily reminder:
“You’re going to have to live in what you build.”
